PCB manufacturing in OM Electronics

The Steps Involved in PCB Manufacturing
  1. PCB CAM Processing: The first step is CAM processing of the PCB and generating Gerber files. Before manufacturing starts, it is crucial to have a design as it acts as a blueprint. Tools like EAGLE, KICAD, etc., are used, and guides on generating Gerber files are available in our User Guides.
  2. PCB Bare Board Preparation: Once the design is ready, the required board area is determined, and bare boards are cut according to that area.
  3. Drilling the Boards with Excellon Drill Data: Holes are drilled on the bare board at exact spots using the Gerber files, exposing the surface and inner layers of the board.
  4. Plating Through the Hole: Copper is deposited on the inner surfaces of the holes to allow current to flow through all layers.
  5. Applying Negative Circuit Patterns on PCB: Using the Gerber files, all negative circuit patterns are applied on the PCB using ink.
  6. Copper Deposition: Copper is electrochemically deposited onto the board surface to build up the tracks.
  7. Tin-Plating: Copper traces are coated with tin layers to mask them during etching.
  8. Applying Positive Patterns on the PCB: Positive circuit patterns are applied on the PCB using ink, based on the Gerber files.
  9. Etching: Unwanted copper is removed using chemicals to reveal the circuit design.
  10. Tin-Stripping: Tin applied earlier is removed using chemicals, ensuring the copper tracks are intact.
  11. Solder Mask: A thin polymer layer is applied on copper traces to prevent oxidation. Green is the most commonly used color.
  12. HASL/ENIG: Finishes for the PCB include lead-free plating. HASL (Hot Air Solder Leveling) applies silver plating, while ENIG (Electroless Nickel Immersion Gold) applies gold plating.
  13. Testing: Flying probe testing is conducted to inspect the electrical properties, analog components, signature analysis, and open circuits.
  14. Silkscreen: Also called Legend Printing, this labels components, test points, part numbers, and warnings to identify layers and components.
  15. CNC Routing of PCB: A CNC router cuts multiple PCBs from a single panel into the required shapes.
  16. De-Panelization and Packing: Boards are removed from panels and packed for shipping.
  17. Shipping Preparation and Dispatch: Finally, PCBs are shipped, and tracking information is provided until the package reaches its destination.
